Steve. I agree. Organisations and businesses get to the point where frequently process and structure kills natural diversity. As someone once said, the day when a company introduces an innovation department is the day that they should realise that they are probably not actually innovative by nature. Many people want controllable innovation or innovation to order - which sort of defeats the purpose and real world realities. It gets worse in my mind because our education system also strips out edu-diversity early on. So we encourage kids to stream and select what they do early on. The target grade agenda means kids go to what they think they can get good grades at vs what they might be interested in. All in all we often train our kids what to think - rather than given the diversity, time and absence of targets to learn for themselves how to think. Amusingly, when this absence of a critical thinking ability was raised the answer was....to introduce a critical thinking GCSE. No encourage critical thinking on everything. Then you get a generation of people willing to see things differently and who want to have a go at shaping the future for themselves.

Good piece Mark...bringing the plight of bees to the attention of many - adding to concerns. While the need for Business biodiversity is a clear need...risks for both starting/failing or waiting/shrinking mean many businesses do neither...exacerbated by a media clamour of uncertainty, further adding to indecision. Many decision makers need not only the bravery to take a decision, they really need a simple, first step/action that gets the business moving again.
